If you are a tow boat operator, a recreational boater, a fisherman, a marina operator, or otherwise live, work or engage in recreational activities around America's waterways, the United States Coast Guard wants your help in keeping these areas safe and secure. You can do this by participating in its America's waterway watch program, a nationwide initiative similar to the well known and successful Neighborhood Watch program that asks community members to report suspicious activities to local law enforcement agencies.

MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- A fire broke out Thursday on the Jamaica-bound Star Princess cruise ship, and one person died of a heart attack, according to cruise line officials.

Two people suffered significant smoke inhalation and nine others had "minor complications from smoke inhalation," said a statement from Princess Cruises, which is owned by Carnival Corp.

You Don't Want to Foul Up,
When Fueling Up: Some Do's and Don't at the Marine Pump

Several years ago my wife and I took her cousin and his girlfriend out for a ride in my 19th runabout. We were running low on gas so I pulled into a gas dock. Now, my cousin had been a boater for years, but his girlfriend was a novice as far as boating went. We tied up to the dock, I killed the engine and I'm just starting to prepare the vessel for fueling, when I look aft and see the girlfriend lighting up a cigarette. Can you say P*A*N*I*C? I guess she missed the class on gas vapors, flames and the effects of heat, and combustible gas along with flying debris has on the human body when she got her Ph.D. This is one of those experiences best read about and not lived.).

2008 is the Yime to Make the Difference. The More You Know, the Less Likely You'll Get in Trouble…

Each year thousands of recreational boaters get into trouble. Most often its little things like engine malfunctions or hitting a sand bar. Other times it's more serious like collisions with another vessel and vessels striking a stationary object like a dock. The more serious the problem was, the greater the chance for injury and loss of life.

The overwhelming number of problems encountered by boaters throughout the country could have been either improved significantly or prevented by increasing your knowledgebase. Sounds like a Coast Guard manual, doesn't it. So, to simplify, the more you know, the less likely you'll get in trouble. Full Article>>>
